Overview

BPC-157 ('body protection compound') is a lab-made peptide derived from a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is one of the most talked-about 'healing' peptides in the fitness and recovery communities.

The enthusiasm rests almost entirely on animal studies and anecdote - there are essentially no controlled human trials. It is not FDA-approved, and its US compounding status is actively changing in 2026 (see legal status).

How it works

In animal models, BPC-157 appears to modulate blood-vessel growth (angiogenesis) via the VEGFR2 and nitric-oxide pathways, upregulate growth-hormone receptors in fibroblasts, and engage FAK/ERK signaling. The net effect in these studies is faster healing of tendon, muscle, gut and other tissues, plus anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective actions.

Proponents describe the angiogenic effect as 'modulatory' - normalizing vessel growth where needed - rather than a blanket signal to grow vessels everywhere, though this distinction is not settled in humans.

What the research shows

The evidence base is roughly three dozen animal studies and very little human data. Rodent work consistently shows tendon-to-bone healing, gut protection (ulcer and colitis models), and reduced inflammation. Standard genotoxicity tests have not flagged DNA damage.

What is missing is controlled human efficacy and long-term safety data - so benefits reported by users remain anecdotal rather than proven.
